The current Women’s 7s National Champions San Diego Surfers are partnering with the UC San Diego Women’s Team to host a Women’s 7s Rugby Clinic on May 9. The morning session will include 7s skills and drills, and the afternoon will feature tournament style 7s games. Surfers coaches and players will lead the clinic and participate in player development throughout the day. This clinic is open to any women’s rugby players age 18 and up (high school, college, women’s). Please register as an individual ($25) or team ($200) here:
Since there are very few collegiate women’s sevens sides up and running in the SoCal area, we thought this type of introductory event combined with scrimmages would be a great learning and development opportunity for all. The Surfers will continue to feature similar events in the future with hopes of growing the sport of 7s to collegiate and other developing players in the San Diego and Southern California region.
We would love to have you and your team attend! Please forward this information on to your team and any others in your area that may be interested!
Thanks and hope to see you May 9!

Gearing up to play in our own Champagne Classic, SD Surfers traveled up to Long Beach this past Sunday for a friendly Scrimmage against Belmont Shore Women’s Rugby D1. It was a wonderful day of rugby where both teams got the opportunity to have players try out new positions. Surfers emerged victorious in a 33-3 final.
Many thanks to Belmont Shore Women’s Rugby for being such gracious hosts and providing a wonderful social at Panama Joe’s. Special thanks to Kara Mathews of the Surfers for organizing and driving a team van up to Long Beach!
Congrats to Women of the Match voted by both Belmont and Surfers – Leilani, Claire, and Crush!

The Surfers 7s team brought home the gold to San Diego after a very competitive tournament in Seattle. In pool play, Surfers started with a big win against newcomers Mana Wahine from Hawaii. The second game was not as easy against the Old Blue of New York but Surfers managed to squeak by with a couple of tries. The final pool game Surfers got in the groove against DC Furies with a big victory. Next up in the quarterfinals was Atlanta. The Harlequins had a tough defense, holding the Surfers to just 2 tries, 10-0. Sunday in the semi-finals, Surfers faced the reigning champion Berkeley All-Blues. All-Blues pushed into the try zone at half time to go up 14-12 but in the second half, Surfers scored 3 unanswered tries to put them in the final, where they would again play the Old Blue of New York.
The final was our best match of the tournament both offensively and defensively and Surfers came out with a 47-0 victory to earn the National Champion title. All 12 players had shining moments and scored tries in the tournament. It was a great way to the end the season and an awesome finale for coach Richie Walker, captain Katie Lorenz, and vice captain Liz Strohecker.
